Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Ji, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shri Shivraj Singh Chauhan, and Union Jal Shakti Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in the presence of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, at a virtual event on Monday, inked a pact to link the Ken-Betwa rivers of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The three-stage agreement assumes more significance since it was signed on the occasion of World Water Day. Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji termed this a historic agreement, which will prove to be the fate line of the golden future of the entire Bundelkhand. While better water management will be possible with this project, he pointed out, on the other hand, the availability of water will also be ensured to the people of Bundelkhand.

It will also be a factor of progress in this area, the prime minister said while pointing out how the river linking project of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji was now taking shape. This is a revolutionary step, which will benefit the people of this region for a long time, he stated further while appealing to the people of Bundelkhand to extend their full support to complete this scheme at the earliest.

It is noteworthy that under this agreement, in a total area of 2.51 lakh hectare in Banda, Jhansi, Mahoba, Lalitpur, and Hamirpur districts of the Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh the irrigation facility will be provided and strengthened. Also, 67 million cubic meters of water will be made available to 21 lakh population in Jhansi, Mahoba, Lalitpur, and Hamirpur districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Under this project, Daudhan Dam will be built on the river Ken in Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, from which a 221 km long link channel will be taken out, which will provide water to Betwa River near Barua near Jhansi. Under the project, about 37,564 hectares in district Mahoba, about 3,533 hectares in Lalitpur, about 17,488 hectares in Jhansi, 26,900 hectares in Hamirpur, and about 1,92,479 hectares of land in Banda will get the benefit of irrigation facility.

Apart from this, about 14.66 million cubic meter in the Jhansi district, about 31.98 million cubic meter in Lalitpur, 2.79 million cubic meter in Hamirpur, and about 20.13 million cubic meter of water in Mahoba will be made available for drinking purpose. Two new barrages will be constructed for storing about 128 million cubic meters of water, which will provide water as per the requirements, by constructing two new barrages the downstream of Bariyarpur pickup weir.

Under the project, construction, renovation, and restoration of structures such as Bariarpur pickup weir, Parichha weir, Barua Sagar dam, etc. will be done. The work of water tanks and their water system is proposed in district Mahoba, through which water can be used during the non-monsoon period by collecting water during the monsoon period. Districts of Banda and Jhansi will benefit from pressurized pipe system and micro-irrigation system. Ensuring arrangements will be made to fill the dam by connecting the Maudaha Dam located in the district Hamirpur with Betwa Link Canal.

Outlets will be provided as per the requirement of Uttar Pradesh on Ken-Betwa Link Canal. Providing water during rainy season in dams built in Mahoba, Hamirpur and Jhansi districts will ensure their filling. The Ken-Betwa Link Project will prove to be a golden chapter in the all-around development of Bundelkhand.
